A Review - Painting the Web | 09/06/2008 - 03:52 |
Rating: 3.5 Painting the Web by Shelly Powers is not the type of book I would normally pick up. Having 14 years web design experience means that you tend to have absorbed something in the way of use of graphics on the web, from raster images, to Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), which is what this book is all about. Looking at this book from its title alone, I first thought, Painting the Web was a book on SVG. But I was wrong, well partly wrong. Shelly, takes you through what make |

Skia graphics library in Chrome: First impressions | 09/05/2008 - 20:11 |

The code is apparently derived from Google’s 2005 acquisition of North Carolina-based software firm Skia and is now provided under the Open Source Apache License |

Font MIME Types | 08/21/2008 - 08:43 |
roc reports on the Web Fonts battle of which the short version is whether the non-IE browsers should support a DRM format for fonts. (And maybe also whether they can support TrueType and OpenType out of the box.) I don’t really think we should support a DRM format for fonts. It seems like it would set a bad precedent on the Web, might make vendors liable if they don’t enforce things right, and complicates matters for authors. The W3C has created a draft charter for an EOT Working Group; EOT (E |

Flash, HTML, Ajax: Which will win the Web app war? | 08/11/2008 - 11:36 |
The days when Web pages were static collections of text and graphics are long past. But as the Web matures, there's a fierce competition over which technology will propel it into a medium for rich, interactive applications. On one side of the battle lines is the original Web page description technology called HTML, or Hypertext Markup Language. Over the years, its abilities were augmented first with JavaScript, a basic programming language, and later a JavaScript-on-steroids technology calle |

Let’s face it: SVG is not the hottest tech to hit our browsers. In fact, it’s one technology that has barely survived, probably due more to the enthusiasm of a few developers than the desire of the web developer community as such. ... |
